Free downloadable template for circular decoration
The image in the attachment is a polar coordinate system: concentric circles that grow in radius from the centre and lines radiating outward at different angles, marked with fractions and degrees along the edge. This kind of chart is often used in pottery to lay out intricate designs or patterns that need to be applied symmetrically around a circular piece, such as a plate or a vase, as when painting or carving on ceramics. It allows for precise placement of the design elements in relation to the circular shape of many pottery pieces.
How do you use it?
First you need to plan the space on your piece's surface to work out the even distribution of decorative or functional elements, such as handles or ornaments.
Then you place the piece on the template, nicely centred, and start marking, always beginning where the text "Start here" appears.
Next, mark the sections you want, noting that they are marked at the ends of each of the radii. Some of them coincide at certain points, such as (5/10).
You just have to make sure it doesn't move during the process.
If you are working on decorating a ceramic plate and you want a floral pattern to repeat evenly around the rim, you could use this chart to mark the exact points where each flower should be painted or carved, making sure the final design is balanced and harmonious.
For example, mark 3 identical sectors on the surface by following the radii marked with a 3, starting from the beginning mark.
To help you visualise the shape of the divisions, geometric shapes in different colours have been used. In the example with 3 sections, it is a red triangle.
I hope this template is useful for your pottery projects. Download it and put it to use.
